Who are we?
LiteracyNOW Coalition
“Education means Emancipation” - Fredrick Douglass
Comprised of legislators, education advocacy organizations, Community Education Council leaders, and parents who view literacy as a civil right, LiteracyNOW Coalition demands, in our time, the emancipation of our children from the school to prison pipeline by producing highly proficient readers and writers using scientifically proven methods of teaching. The LiteracyNOW Coalition platform calls for: the use of evidence-based structured literacy curriculum proven to teach essential skills to the maximum number of students; fully funded teacher training in evidence based structured literacy; and dyslexia screening for all K-2nd grade students to bring early detection of students who are experiencing reading difficulty.
Literacy Academy Collective
Literacy Academy Collective designs and supports NYC Public Schools to bring evidence-based literacy instruction into the classroom. We partner with schools, families, community-based organizations, and institutes of higher education to bring culturally relevant, structured literacy to the most marginalized students at the intersection of race, income, and disability. Our aim is to alter life outcomes by allowing children to access learning through literacy.
Seeking to open our first in a network of schools in Fall 2023, our Literacy Academy will be the first equity-driven, culturally relevant DOE K-8 public school that provides scientifically proven instruction to support students with dyslexia and other struggling readers. We will deliver structured literacy with fidelity across all subjects, allowing students to build literacy skills to access rigorous and engaging culturally relevant content. Our equity-based admissions model targets historically marginalized students living in poverty and English Language Learners reflecting city averages. We aim to be the first structured literacy educational option in the public sector made available to students who are otherwise barred from accessing their education because they are not given the tools to read and write.
